SM3W - sounds like an English postcode. Is that where this was taken?

Six Feet Under ... it reminds me of it.

Well I guess a five person sample group is more than I should hope for, so maybe I should attempt to draw some conclusions.

For the record: whoever stuck these letters up used the 'W' for the 'M', the 'M' for the 'W', and put the 'S' on upside down as well.

The first time I saw the sign it slapped me in the face, and I was curious as to whether that's because I take a special interest in letterforms, or whether it's something that would be apparent to anyone familiar with our alphabet, no matter who they were or what they were into.

So, from what I know of you all, I think I can confidently conclude that people who have lived in Doncaster and/or Templestowe are more likely to notice transposed/inverted letterforms than people who drive Hyundais.

Oh, and JJ, the photo was taken in Fitroy North, and CK, JJ 69'd MEWS because he loves Leet so much and tries to use it whenever he can. :-)

Erm, at the risk of overexplaining things...

If you crop the word "MEWS" from that picture and flip it 180 degrees (which I did) suddenly the M, W and S look a lot more normal. Unfortunately, the 'E' then looks like a '3' but hey, the other three letters are now correct, so it must be the 3/E that was wrong to start with; and 'SM3W' looks enough like an English postcode for it to be funny.

(Actually, an English postcode usually has more than 4 characters, but it is possible to use shorter strings to specify larger areas. If 'SM3W' was a real postcode, it would be fully contained inside the area bounded by the postcode 'SM3', for example.)

I wish I knew less about English postcodes - most of what I know I have learnt in the past few weeks, for the same reasons I have had less spare time and been more short-tempered of late. :-)

hey apostropher,

i saw this post AGES ago, and didn't even bother to post a reply because it seemed so obvious...! I thought it was a rhetorical question! Instantly obvious that the M and the W were in a bit of a whoopsy-daisy upside-down swapsy arrangement. I will, however, admit to not having twigged to the S being upside down. Perhaps because the M and W were so eyegaze-grabbingly wrong!

Keep 'em coming!

Aha! Thanks for your input, Jess. Now can you confirm my conclusions? Are you now or have you ever lived in Templestowe or Doncaster? I'm hoping you don't drive a Hyundai? Cheers.

Jessie said...

haha you are incorrect, and correct, in that order. i do not and have not lived in doncaster or templestowe, nor do i drive a hyundai.

i did, however, spot 2/3 of that mistake!

Oh bugger. Well that's my theory shot then. I asked Kate (from whom no secrets of the human condition are hidden) what conclusions she would draw from Tim and CK failing to notice something that the others did not, and she concluded, quite simply, that they were stupid. :-)

JJ Glamma said...

You shouldn't call CK stupid. Something tells me he's in need of a lift right now.

I got it straight away...damn I'm good!

And as you drive a Hyundai, you're good at finishing off my theory (clears throat) with a well aimed blow to the head as well, Jay. (clears throat).

Nice to have you commenting on my typeblog, too!

Oh, and all that throat clearing is solely for JJ's benefit, so just keep movin' if it makes no sense. :)
